The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at 鶹ýӳ in Jupiter will present a lecture by Michael Tougias on Thursday, Dec. 14 at 2:30 p.m. in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute complex at FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus, 5353 Parkside Dr., in Jupiter.
“So Close to Home: U-boats Off Florida and in the Gulf,” based on his book “So Close to Home,” is the true story of how the Downs family survived 15 hours in the Gulf of Mexico when the freighter that they were on, the Heredia, was torpedoed by a German U-boat on May 19, 1942. The presentation will include a discussion and a book signing.
Michael Tougias is a New York Times bestselling author. He co-authored the book, “The Finest Hours,” about a daring rescue of 30 stranded sailors by the U.S. Coast Guard off the coast of Cape Cod. Disney has released a major motion picture of the same name, starring Chris Pines and Casey Affleck. Tougias is also the author of “Fatal Forecast: A True Tale of Disaster and Survival at Sea,” “Ten Hours Until Dawn: The True Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do,” “Rescue of the Bounty,” “A Storm Too Soon” and “Overboard!” “Ten Hours” was selected as one of the American Library Association’s “Best Books of the Year,” and the audio book won Audiofiles “Earphones Award.”
