鶹ýӳ’s Lifelong Learning Society Jupiter has announced its course offerings for the winter semester, which begins Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017.
Taught by FAU professors and distinguished guest lecturers, course offerings include such varied subjects as foreign policy, political science, film, music, art history and literature. The Lifelong Learning Society was established to provide adults of all ages the opportunity to enrich their lives through non-credit, university-level courses with no homework or tests.
Winter one-time lectures and courses take place in the Lifelong Learning Society complex at FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus, 5353 Parkside Dr., in Jupiter, and include:
- “The Great American Dance Band: 1920-1950,” performed by Aaron Kula and the Klezmer Company Jazz Orchestra. This one-time performance will include music from the FAU Libraries’ “Dance Combo Collection” arranged for a reduced jazz band of eight members. The performance will include popular melodies such as “Blue Skies,” “Way Down in New Orleans” and “Alabamy.”
- “Major Intelligence Issues for the New Administration,” taught by James B. Bruce, Ph.D., senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation where he leads research projects for U.S. government clients. This one-time lecture will examine key intelligence issues, explore how the major candidates might decide them, and examine the implications of making critical choices in intelligence.
- “The History of British Theater: Love from Shakespeare to Coward,” presented by Elizabeth Sharland, lecturer and editor for the food and entertainment section of the Palm Beach Society magazine. This one-time will lecture will examine the lives and careers of the leading actors and actresses of the British acting profession.
- “For Everglades! Forever Glades?” taught by Tom Poulson, Ph.D., a professor who has taught at Yale University, as well as the University of Notre Dame and the University of Illinois. This one-time lecture will explore and discuss the ancient, recent and future history of the Everglades ecosystem.
- “America’s New President: Evaluating Our Political Future,” taught by Kevin Wagner, Ph.D., FAU associate professor of political science and director of graduate studies. This one-time lecture will show what a person should take from newscasts, campaigns and polls.
- “ZAPP! Electricity in Your Body and Your Home,” taught by Stephen Kowel, Ph.D., former dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. This lecture will examine breakers, brain waves and microwaves. Worry that the government can read a person’s mind? Fear someone’s eyeballs will melt when looking into the microwave? This lecture will examine each of these questions and more.
- “Judaism, Christianity and Islam: A Search for a Common Language,” taught by Rabbi Howard Shapiro, Thomas G. O’Brien and Dr. Nasir Ahmed. This eight-week course will involve a series of conversations to examine the varieties of meanings given to key ideas in Judaism, Christianity and Islam as well as differences and similarities in beliefs, rituals, ethics and practices.
