FAU to Host Events for Disability Awareness Month

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ will be hosting events at its Davie, Jupiter, and Boca Raton campuses to commemorate Disability Awareness Month during October.

Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»­ will be hosting events at its Davie, Jupiter, and Boca Raton campuses to commemorate Disability Awareness Month during October. The events are sponsored by FAU’s Office for Students with Disabilities and are open to FAU students, faculty, and staff.

Disability Awareness Luncheon

Tuesday, Oct. 6, from noon to 2 p.m.

Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýThe following events will take place at FAU’s Boca Raton Campus, 777 Glades Road:

Goalball Game

Monday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m.

FAU Recreation & Fitness Center

Goalball is a team sport for blind athletes. Teams of three try to throw a ball embedded with bells into the opponents’ goal while wearing goggles that mimic a visual impairment. Participants judge the position and movement of the ball by the sound of the bell. The goalball game will be officiated by Donte Mickens, U.S. Paralympian and international goalball competitor.

Blind Yoga

Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 5:30 p.m.

FAU Recreation & Fitness Center

Wind down from a busy day with this beginner’s yoga class for the blind and visually impaired. Participants will learn breathing techniques, meditation, and physical postures for health and relaxation.

Wheelchair Basketball

Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6:30 p.m.

FAU Recreation & Fitness Center

One of the most popular events of the month is wheelchair basketball, which is basketball played while seated in wheelchairs. This team sport is one of the most practiced sports for athletes with disabilities. Wheelchair basketball will be officiated by Matt Glowacki, former U.S. Paralympian and motivational speaker.

Disability Awareness Expo

Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Grand Palm Room, FAU Student Union

This event will showcase area vendors of assistive technology, which is technology that supports people with disabilities. There also will be opportunities to experience disability simulations.
